Runners love running, except when we don’t. The first mile or
so of any jaunt can be excruciating. The final mile can take all we’ve got. And
the middle mile can slam us right up against the dreaded runner’s wall.
But we love it.
It’s not just the idyllic runner’s high, the private peace,
the mental downtime, or the sense of personal satisfaction we derive from logging
lots of miles, building our endurance and improving our speed. It’s not only
the finishers’ medals (or perhaps the division or overall awards) we might
receive.
Nope.
Runners gain sweet rewards when we find fabulous fitness
improvements from our running. We burn approximately 100 calories per mile.
That means we can enjoy our favorite foods (in reasonable amounts) without
facing calorie guilt. With regular running, flab turns to firmness. Muscles
become marvelous.
That’s awesome.
Running has its own joys. But it’s also pretty fun to buy a
new pair of jeans in the same size you wore in high school. (I just purchased a
pair of trim-fitting jeans in a size that rhymes with “Shut the front door.” I’m
not gonna mention how many decades it’s been since I fit into that size. Let’s
just say it was a couple of kids ago.)
I’m gonna go put those great jeans on again, fresh from the
dryer. I won’t even have to practice all sorts of strange calisthenics, just to
fasten the waist snap. While I do that, here’s Runderdog’s “Running
Quotes by Non-Runners” selection for today:
“The pain passes, but the beauty
remains.” Auguste Renoir (1841-1919)
I can hardly wait to run again today. (No, not in those
jeans!)
