Wednesday

Purpose is paramount for pursuing the prize.

When you run, do you think of it as running towards something or away from something? Maybe you’re running for the finish line or a personal record time. Perhaps you are running away from a recent injury, weight gain, or nagging medical condition. It could be you are running because you enjoy the company of your fellow runners.

Everybody has a reason for running. What’s yours?

That question points us to today’s “Running Quotes by Non-Runners” pick:

“All human beings should try to learn before they die what they are running from, and to, and why.” James Thurber (1894-1961)

James Thurber, a cartoonist and columnist, was not known as an athlete. Perhaps this is traced, at least in part, to the fact that his brother allegedly shot him in the eye with an arrow, while the two young boys played a William Tell reenactment game.

Thursday

Insight increases invulnerability.

There’s something almost magical about running long distances (especially solo) that gives a person a new perspective on life priorities. Solititude and repetitive rhythm of one’s own pace seem to lead to deeper reflections than the constant chaos and crunches of daily life.

When we step out in sneakers to sweat it out for a significant number of miles, we stop sweating the stupid stresses that have been dogging us.

OK, that’s the lead-in for today’s “Running Quotes by Non-Runners” pick:

“Don’t sweat the petty things, and don’t pet the sweaty things.” George Carlin (1937-2008)

I might beg to differ on the “don’t pet the sweaty things” part. I often run with two dogs tied to my belt. And I do pet them along the way, especially when we stop for traffic lights and busy street crossings.

Hey, sweaty is sweaty. If I’m already gamey from a spirited run, what harm is a little eau de doggy sweat gonna do?

Tuesday

Carb cravings can be consuming.

Crikey. Those carbohydrate cravings can be powerful. What is it about running a bazillion miles to burn off a ginormous amount of calories, only to find that one’s appetite has become a humongous growling angry beast?

There’s a reason a lot of race directors haul truckloads of cookies or chips to their finish lines. It’s called crowd control. Better yet: It’s a form of riot prevention.

Runners are hungry! But gee, haven’t we earned a nice snack? It’s not like we’re couch warming or channel surfing. We’re hitting the bricks and putting our metabolisms through the motions.

Pass the munchies, would you?

And here’s today’s A-Z quote:

“Exercise is a dirty word. Every time I hear it, I wash my mouth out with chocolate.” Charles M. Schultz (1922-2000).

Hey, that’s the PEANUTS guy. Peanuts are good with chocolate. And peanut butter is good all by itself. That gives me an idea. I just need a spoon …
