Timing brings tedium to treadmill running.

Tons of runners not-so-fondly tag the treadmill as the dreadmill. Indoor running is tedious, to be sure. Of course, most of us are grateful to have climate-controlled options for training, when the weather is terrible.

What techniques and tips do we try, when we step onto the treadmill for several miles? Usually, we load up our music devices with favorite songs and slip on our headphones. We might turn on the TV on the treadmill, choose a virtual trail run on the screen (if available), or do both.

The worst thing we can do, in terms of tedium, is to watch the clock on the wall or the timer on the machine. Time seems to slow to a painful crawl when we’re running on the treadmill. It’s totally torturous to plod along and merely count the seconds slipping by.

This takes us to today’s citation for Runderdog’s “Running Quotes by Non-Runners.”

“Oh! Do not attack me with your watch. A watch is always too fast or too slow. I cannot be dictated to by a watch.” Jane Austen (1775-1817)

You can be sure Jane Austen wasn’t writing about the treadmill. But if the running shoe fits …

  1. While I don't run, I use to walk on the treadmill a lot. As long as I was watching something good on the television the time would fly. If not, it was excruciating.Weekends In Maine
